I do love Tom Hanks. And the whole Play Tone Hanks\/Goetzman and Spielberg, erm\u2026 Axis? Thank to these guys we have not only Shaving Ryan\u2019s Privates<\/em>, Band o\u2019 Brothers<\/em>, and Pacific<\/em>. But also Greyhound<\/em>, and, coming soon, Masters o\u2019 the Air<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not a fan of the modern subscription model, which is becoming ever more ubiquitous. Maybe I\u2019d be less bothered if I was wealthier? But as a pauper, it puts a lot of stuff out of reach. And both Greyhound<\/em> and the forthcoming Masters<\/em> are on Apple TV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyhoo, with a free weeks trial – will I do the usual, and forget to cancel in time? – taken out with the intention of watching Masters,<\/em> the first thing I\u2019ve actually watched is Greyhound<\/em>. And I utterly adore it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having read a number books on the Battle o\u2019 the Atlantic, I\u2019ve been a-hankering for just such a fillum. I\u2019ve watched loads of older WWII Naval movies. Many of which are great. But it\u2019s taken time for advances in movie making tech to make possible what this movie delivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Hanks himself wrote the screenplay, basing it on the C. S. Forester book The Good Shepherd<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t synopsise the plot. Suffice it to say it\u2019s great to see this team bring their film making prowess to bear on this oft\u2019 overlooked subject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could waffle on about political balance, historical accuracy, hindsight, and so on. But I can\u2019t be bothered, frankly! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s just terrific fun to watch a film of this quality, on a subject I\u2019ve been longing to see treated just this way. So, thanks, Hanks! And Goetzman, and indeed all who made this a reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a footnote to all this, as so often happens, watching this sort of stuff, I want to dress up\u2026 in this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also an interesting sub-plot, concerning mess-mate Cleveland. I won\u2019t say more on that, but it\u2019s a laudable inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
