I bought my copy from the Museum itself, whilst on a visit to Belgium for the Battle of Waterloo bicentennial celebrations, back in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At only 78 or so pages, it\u2019s a small thing. The format is just off square (17&#215;17.5cm), and I t\u2019s beautifully designed and printed, as befits it\u2019s subject. Some of my pics &#8211; taken whilst reading the book in bed, in low light &#8211; are a bit dark. But as a light and fun way to learn a little about Herg\u00e9, whilst revelling in the pure joy of admiring his work, this is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, all in all, you get a little bit of info\u2019 about the Museum itself, a decent chunk on Herg\u00e9\u2019s life, from start to finish, plus plentiful example of his work, from the earliest to the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8310-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12611\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8310-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8310-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8310-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8310.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wow! Just one illustration, and it\u2019s awesome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And whilst Tintin looms large, as of course one would fully expect, there\u2019s much besides: from his early Boy Scout stuff, to his design and advertising work, and taking in his other less well known cartoon creations, like Quick &amp; Flupke, or Joe, Zette &amp; Rocko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I occasionally pick this slim little volume up, and peruse it. Sometimes working stolidly, from start to finish, but more often  dipping in at random. It never fails to put a smile on my face. Enlightening and entertaining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8311-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12612\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8311-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8311-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8311-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8311.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is a real classic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also some modest homely wisdom to be learned from Herg\u00e9\u2019s example. Alas, idiot that I am, I still haven\u2019t taken to heart what he could\u2019ve taught me oh so many years ago. But the insights are there, even if I (stubbornly and moronically?) refuse to adopt them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, all told a terrific wee tome, that punches well above its weight. Granted, the slightly hagiographic text reads a bit oddly in places, having a rather florid Gallic feel. Something to do with the translation, and differences in national styles, possibly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8312-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12613\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8312-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8312-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8312-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8312.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A great observation on modern art.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t seriously diminish the overall richness of the experience. At least not for me.
