I\u2019d heard him on recordings, but not been aware of him as an individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out he was not only a sideman with Billy Cobham and co, touring and recording with the drummer during the seventies, but he also worked with trumpeter and composer\/bandleader Don Ellis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8486-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12807\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8486-1-1024x576.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8486-1-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8486-1-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8486-1.png 1334w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">And Milcho Liviev\u2019s shirt? Off the chart!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trivia fans might be interested to know that track one of Don Ellis\u2019 1973\u2019s <em>Soaring<\/em> album is a certain Whiplash, by saxophonist and composer Hank Levy\u2026 as used in, and indeed giving it\u2019s name to, the 2014 \u2018jazz studies horror\u2019 film of that name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, back to <em>Haiku<\/em>, also released in \u201873. It\u2019s the kind of album that causes some, so called \u2018jazz purists\u2019, for example, to break out in sweaty or clammy hot n\u2019 cold flushes, and all manner of other febrile eruptive ailments, wondering, \u2018but\u2026 is it jazz?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-TaaCkjoITQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ah, the 1970s. What times for music.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Who gives a good goddamn? My main criterion for music is, do I like it? Or put another way, does it move me, or in some way connect with me? And the answer with <em>Haiku <\/em>is, yes, in a mixed bag of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don Ellis is yet another character, or star, within the many galaxies of music, and jazz music within that, that I simply must explore more. I didn\u2019t realise he was also a drummer, as well as a famed trumpeter and bandleader, composer, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"326\" height=\"420\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8495-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12819\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8495-1.jpg 326w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8495-1-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yowsers! One hip cat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s done a lot of film soundtrack work. And is also known for composing and performing music in unusual time signatures, and what was once referred to as \u2018Third Stream\u2019 experimentalism. This last refers to bringing elements of the so called classical tradition to bear, on jazz and popular music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as featuring Leviev, on keys, who I just discovered thanks to the Cobham concert footage, these two also share contributions from trombonist Glenn Ferris. And there are other notable and\/or recognisable names, such as guitarist Jay Graydon, famed for his solo on Steely Dan\u2019s Peg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fP86o86LPz0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Phew\u2026 intense!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above video captures a later Don Ellis group performing live at Montreux Jazz Festival. Holy guacamole! Seriously intense. The more I hear Don Ellis, the more I want to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I definitely want to add Haiku to my music collection. Being totally broke at present that\u2019ll have to wait. But in the meantime I can enjoy it via YouTube. Which is better than not being able to hear it at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FOOTNOTE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rather sad coda to this post: I discovered Don Ellis died, of a heart attack, only a year after the above 1977 Montreux performance. He was only 44 years old! He seems so full of life in the Montreux footage.
