I\u2019d love this. It looks incredibly beautifully put together. And I can imagine that it would have me delving down a warrens-worth of musical rabbit-holes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British jazz isn\u2019t something I\u2019ve ever taken too much of an interest in, per se, to be brutally honest. I mean, there\u2019s such vast amounts to be explored coming out of the birthplace of jazz, the US of A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"567\" height=\"564\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8623-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12907\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8623-1.jpg 567w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8623-1-300x298.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8623-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8623-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the few Brit-jazz albums I own.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve explored the tiniest amouts of European jazz, and even less British stuff. I have Stan Tracey\u2019s <em>Under Milk Wood<\/em>, somewhere. And I have a terrific Chris Bowden album called <em>Time Capsule<\/em>. And more recently there\u2019s stuff by local heroes, like the Portico Quartet, and Resolution 88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mind you, all of the latter &#8211; save Stan Tracey &#8211; would fall outside the chronological remit of this very handsome looking tome, which covers the golden era that spanned 1960-75.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What (else) can I sell, to fund purchasing this, I wonder? Trouble is, I\u2019m not having much luck selling the stuff I\u2019m already trying to flog. There were other jazzy joints, I think, like Honest Jon\u2019s. But I very rarely fit out that way (West London). And towards the end of my time In\u2019t Smoke, some new ones began appearing, like Mr Bongo, that carried a lot of jazz, but were a bit broader in their catalogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"866\" height=\"608\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8620-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12904\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8620-1.jpg 866w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8620-1-300x211.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8620-1-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ah, those old and fading memories!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Ray\u2019s and Mole closed. I didn\u2019t realise this, but Ray\u2019s Jazz is actually still going, as a sub-department, within Foyle\u2019s Bookshop, London. And, whether I succeed in that endeavour or not, I gots to start digging into British jazz history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FOOTNOTE<\/strong>\u2026 Oops! And I suddenly remembered that, actually, whilst that\u2019s still broadly speaking very true, there are some things I forgot I\u2019d checked out. Such as the Torrid Zone collection of Ian Carr\/Nucleus recordings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve also started to check out recordings by Neil Ardley. And then there\u2019s the connections between UK prog and Brit-Jazz\u2026 and so it goes, on and on. The musical multiverses multiply. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wowzers!
