His only support comes from colleague Bill Maguire (McKern). But Stenning&#8217;s personal implosion starts to assume different proportions, when a lady he encounters at The Met Office drops the bombshell that nuclear tests have changed the earth&#8217;s axis, with terrifying global consequences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1313\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2211-300x242.jpg\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1313\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" alt=\"The Day The Earth Caught Fire\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2211-300x242.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2211.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The films veracity is helped by the use of real locations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the scale of what&#8217;s happened becomes apparent, both globally and locally, normal life goes out the window. The paper struggles to continue functioning, as does everyone, from individuals to organisations, as the ramifications of the disaster start to bite: temperatures soar, weather patterns change, water is rationed, the Thames dries up, and society starts to fall apart at the seams<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1310\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2208-300x125.png\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1310\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" alt=\"The Day The Earth Caught Fire\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2208-300x125.png 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2208-768x320.png 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2208-1024x427.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2208.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harry&#8217;s Wine Bar also features in Rumpole.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Interwoven with this are the subplots of Stenning&#8217;s blossoming affair with Jeanie (Munro), the Met Office girl, and the day to day life of Maguire and co, at the newspaper offices and their local watering holes. And numerous scenes showing London streets and landmarks desolate and sweltering. It&#8217;s all very effective. And, given current fears over global warming, both prescient and somewhat surprising, given the film&#8217;s vintage.<\/p>\n<p>But I guess it belongs rather to the post-WWII nuclear apocalypse genre, as opposed to the more recent greenhouse gases issue. Still, in essence it&#8217;s the same sort of thing; humanity commits techno hari-kiri.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2210-300x165.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1312\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" alt=\"The Day The Earth Caught Fire\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2210-300x165.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_2210.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe not a truly great film. But certainly an interesting discovery, possibly even worthy of the epithet &#8216;gem&#8217;? And perhaps also deserving of cult status, as an insight into our perennial fears of self-inflicted doom?
