Still love her music. Just not listened to much recently. Instead, I\u2019m getting my jazz harp fix from Dorothy Ashby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above linked YouTube video, the complete <em>Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby<\/em>, is great. And it\u2019s aptly named. Of course Dot\u2019s harp is the star attraction. I didn\u2019t know this until listening to this album prompted me to dig around a bit, but\u2026 he\u2019s the bassist on Van Morrison\u2019s <em>Astral Weeks!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"218\" height=\"231\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/img_8865-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13115\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Grady Tate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And the drummer is Grady Tate\u2026 nuff said!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Percussionist Willie Bobo adds to the engine room grooviness. And numerous cuts feature a four-piece horn section, comprising only trombones!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five of the ten cuts on this disc are Ashby originals. The five covers range from pop to \u2018trad arr\u2019. But it looks well worth it, to my mind (and ears). And it\u2019s utterly sublime! I initially felt a bit dismissive of this album, purely on the basis of it being a later recording (1984). And maybe the cover art? Well, I was mightily mistaken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Django\u2026 Misty<\/em>, and <em>Concierto de Aranjuez <\/em>were Ashby\u2019s last releases. Both coming out on the Philips label in 1984. Can\u2019t find it at an affordable price tho\u2019\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s funny how stuff can sometimes take a while to connect. I got an mp3 only version of Dorothy\u2019s <em>Afro-Harping<\/em> many moons back (over a decade ago). And I loved it. But I didn\u2019t dig any deeper at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then came my fairly intense period of listening to and loving Alice Coltrane.
