From Kynard\u2019s playing, which obviously gets star billing, to the supporting cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"573\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/img_0135-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14160\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/img_0135-1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/img_0135-1-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The cast. Richard Fritz, top left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Arranger Richard Fritz deserves kudos, for his excellent compositions and arrangements. I read, on dougpayne.com, that he and Kynard were school chums! And then the musicians, who make this superb gumbo, really ought to be remembered and celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s great to see that, in the instance of bassist Chuck Rainey, they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5XX2e6WredM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I put Kynard\u2019s rendering of Joe Quarterman &amp; Free Soul\u2019s \u2018So Much Trouble\u2019 front and centre for three reasons: one, it\u2019s a totally ace slab of funky fabulosity (and that\u2019d be reason enough); two, Rainey\u2019s bass is superb throughout\u2026 but three is the clincher; he gets to take a solo. Quite rare. His recording contributions are usually more \u2018supporting\u2019 than \u2018featured\u2019, if you know what I mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I were choosing bassists that have made a great impression on me, and who I aim to emulate when I pick up an electric bass, he\u2019d probably be right at the top of my picks. I particularly like his lightly bubbling finger style sixteenths, in his right hand. Along, of course, with his choices of notes (a favourite Ron Carter theme) with his south-paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a great musician!
