Another legend from the world of Jazz leaves the earthly jam session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Cuscuna, best known for his work on the Blue Note catalogue, and as co-founder of DeLuxe reissue imprint Mosaic, died yesterday, aged 75.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more about Cuscuna\u2019s life in Jazz in this <a href=\"https:\/\/downbeat.com\/news\/detail\/michael-cuscuna-lifetime-achievement-in-recording\">Downbeat feature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m chuffed to read that he started out as a drummer (and also apparently played sax and flute!), as one myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"225\" height=\"152\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/img_0442.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14405\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cuscuna, Bearsville Studio, Woodstock, 1972<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This quote from Cuscuna pops up here and there on the web:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I remember once I was doing a record with Dexter Gordon at 30<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Street called&nbsp;<\/em>Gotham City<em>, and Art Blakey was on drums. During the session Art looked at me and said, \u2018Man, you remind me of Alfred Lion.\u2019 That was the greatest line I ever heard, you know?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This puts me in mind of something Tolkien has Faramir say to Sam, in <em>The Lord of The Rings<\/em>: \u2018The praise of the praiseworthy is above all reward\u2019. Indeed.
