I\u2019d planned to stop in a tea room. Alarmingly so!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end I didn\u2019t start reading this new and fab little book til much later in the day. Indeed, after completing a second shift. Leaving behind a fantastic literary legacy, including such legendary titles as <em>Treasure Island<\/em>, <em>Kidnapped<\/em>, and <em>Dr Jekyll &amp; My Hyde<\/em>, amongst many others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"765\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14760\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1-1024x765.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1-768x574.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1-1536x1147.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0769-1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brilliant!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above passage, like a lot of Stevenson\u2019s writing, is stuffed to bursting with insight, and quotable words: \u2018exulting in my solitude\u2019! The bit about \u2018one of those truths\u2026\u2019 is fab, with the mystic\u2019s appeal to instinctual knowledge or insight over the dusty pronouncements of the learn\u00e8d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the pure gold of the passage \u2018there is a fellowship more quiet even than solitude\u2026 rightly understood, is solitude made perfect\u2026\u2019 Bob, I love ya\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"357\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786-1024x357.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14802\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786-1024x357.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786-300x105.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786-768x268.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786-1536x536.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0786.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amen, brother Bob.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Travels With A Donkey<\/em> was written as the author made his titular trip through The Cevennes, in France. He was ministering to his heartache, his lady of that time having left him to return to the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day he\u2019s studiously write up what he\u2019d experienced in the last 24 hours, whether he was at an inn, or in \u2018God\u2019s Hotel\u2019, under the stars. And what he writes is wonderfully enchanting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"272\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804-1024x272.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14803\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804-1024x272.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804-300x80.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804-768x204.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804-1536x409.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0804.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Again, the theme of head vs heart knowledge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He starts out by buying Modestine, the she-ass of the book\u2019s title. His relationship with her is fascinating. Evolving from embarrassed naivety to experienced disdain pretty rapidly. But all the while retaining a compassionate humanity towards his beast of burden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as narrating what the landscapes, weather and people are like, as he travels, he also: indulges in philosophical speculation; tales a lot about religion\/God, etc; and even gives us some local history, most notably regarding the revolt of The Camisards, 180 years prior to his travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"184\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806-1024x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14804\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806-1024x184.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806-300x54.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806-768x138.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806-1536x276.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0806.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Great words.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He stays in a Catholic retreat at one point. And several simple country inns. But he seems happiest on those nights when sleeping outdoors, in a kind of proto-bobby-bag, manufactured at the start of the trip to his own specifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He comes over as a very affable if slightly patronisingly sort. To his great credit, he is publicly humble, whilst reserving his \u2018loftier\u2019 judgements for the \u2018privacy\u2019 of his journaling. Which then, ironically, perhaps, he publishes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the little photo extracts that pepper this post show, he is eminently quotable. And eloquently and succinctly expresses things in a straightforward way. A way that has traversed the passage of intervening time very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"236\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805-1024x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14805\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805-1024x236.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805-300x69.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805-768x177.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805-1536x353.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_0805.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Love this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When, at journeys end, he parts with Modestine, it\u2019s quite moving, in an unexpected and humble way. Indeed, it moved me to compose a poem on the subject. I\u2019ll most likely share that elsewhere, at another time. But one word on it here; unlike most of my poems, which are entirely (so far as I know) my own words, <em>Farewell, Modestine <\/em>uses a lot of RLS, for brickwork, with me adding only the necessary cement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with much of the best writing, reading his promotes a desire to read more by the author.
