Too cool for words!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the picture above. I think of it as \u2018beatnik with a bassoon\u2019! I\u2019m not sure exactly what instrument David Munrow is actually playing, in the photo. But the bassoon was one of the first things he learned, as a child, so it seems apt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As this post will attest, I\u2019m undergoing a mildly manic phase of digging deeper into David Munrow, the man and the music. And more\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve posted on this topic before (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/?p=12827\">here<\/a>, for example). But I intend to make this post into a longer-term place to collect as much stuff on the subject as I can. Stuff like <a href=\"http:\/\/earlymusiclegend.blogspot.com\/2023\/01\/welcome-to-early-music-legend.html?m=1\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"275\" height=\"221\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/img_5630-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19231\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Munrow, in \u201876. The year he took his own life.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This evening, as I battle the Black Eyed Dog myself, I googled \u2018why David Munrow suicide?\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/music\/articles\/8dab9370-63be-4e07-95d6-141104ddf69d\">This<\/a> came up; which, it turned out, was more about his life than his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem morbid, but I <em>do<\/em> want to know more about the where, when, how, and why of his hanging himself, aged just 33, in &#8211; I think? &#8211; the beautiful Bucks village of Chesham Bois, back in \u201876.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/img_5631-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19232\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/img_5631-1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/img_5631-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">St Leonard&#8217;s Church, Chesham Bois.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Well, partly because I feel that I partake of a similar manic depressive psyche. In researching this rather macabre topic I learned several things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That he has a sister (an actress, still alive and working); that the date of his demise was 15th May. And that he had attempted suicide before, by drug overdose. What drugs? Prescription, or other? And I adore them. I was worried the top one &#8211; <em>Instruments of the Middle Ages<\/em> &#8211; might be too programmatic and educational to make good listening. How wrong I was! But I\u2019ll save \u2018reviewing\u2019 any of these recordings for another time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, my passion for further exploration of Munrow and the great variety of predominantly older &#8211; or \u2018Early\u2019 &#8211; music he helped make more widely known is leading me to collect more of his recorded legacy. I think I read somewhere that in the mere decade of his recording car etc he released about 55 recordings! I\u2019d probably have preferred to stick with records. But, many moons ago, those cheeky smaller CDs more or less eclipsed the much bulkier vinyl. Only for us to then witness a more recent renaissance of records. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the bulk of my music collection, I\u2019m stuck with CDs, format wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[<strong>pic<\/strong>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to try and compile a list of Munrow\u2019s recorded works, and see what formats they\u2019re available in (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medieval.org\/emfaq\/performers\/munrow.html\">this website<\/a> should help me do that).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give a few examples, here\u2019s a series of mini galleries, contrasting some old vinyl versions with CDs that contain the same, or overlapping, content. But I\u2019ll have to put up with the visual aesthetic let-down. started, kind of, for me. I say kind of, \u2018cause I encountered <em>The Hobbit<\/em> music not on this funky old vinyl LP, but embedded in the CD version of the BBC radio adaptation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
