And we\u2019re enjoying it. But I do confess, I wish these movie-makers wouldn\u2019t fuck around with their source material so much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, if they <em>really<\/em> &#8211; as they invariably do &#8211; feel they have to, at least to do so in a manner more in keeping with that source material. When that source is Tolkien, I feel it deserves more respect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I can\u2019t be arsed to expend any energy pulling apart the myriad ways this departs from Tolkien\u2019s \u2019canon\u2019. In some respects it\u2019s a bastardised realisation of something I believe he wanted to achieve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9074-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23103\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9074-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9074-1-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9074-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9074-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I recall reading that in creating his Middle Earth mythology, Tolkien aspired to create a form of British or indigenous alternative to the faulty weak mishmash of Arthurian type stuff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something more akin to the darker more complex Northern tales he studied in his philological work. And something that could be built upon by others. Well, the genie\u2019s out of the bottle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite what Tolkien would make of how his legacy is evolving, I\u2019m not sure. I think in some respects he might be pleased. At least that folk thought his myths compelling enough to further elucidate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"619\" height=\"1000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9075-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23104\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9075-1.jpg 619w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9075-1-186x300.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But I also think he might be more than a little horrified, at having spawned rapidly evolving empires of imaginary worlds, and the rather capitalist \u2019product\u2019 type nature of it all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> to what is being done to his legacy. I may be wrong. But I think, for all his stuff about \u2018fairey\u2019, that he was primarily concerned with <em>culture<\/em>. Not just entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And certainly not the hollow pursuit of big bucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9091-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23106\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9091-1.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9091-1-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tolkien, the original Hobbit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FOOTNOTE<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s fascinating how much of a Tolkien\u2019s work is being dredged through, in the search for yet more publishing bucks. Hopefully there\u2019s also genuine love for and interest in it, as well as the relentless pursuit of profit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally I\u2019ve really enjoyed how his offspring have helped finish some of his unfinished fiction.
