What fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bragg\u2019s guests are: Michael Rowe (Reader in European History at Kings College, London), Katherine Astbury (Professor of French Studies at the University of Warwick) and Zack White (Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at the University of Portsmouth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They give a very good account of the events, from Napoleon\u2019s near miraculous \u2018flight of the Eagle\u2019 (not that they refer to his return using that phrase) &#8211; his return from Elban exile &#8211; through to the four battles of the Waterloo campaign, and the aftermath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"549\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9442-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23263\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9442-1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9442-1-300x206.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/img_9442-1-768x527.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">HMS Bellerophon, aka Billy Ruffian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to hear Katherine Astbury describe how Napoleon\u2019s constitutional changes survive his downfall. And the discussion on the legacy of the Napoleonic Wars as a whole is, as ever, endlessly fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, when asked who benefited most from the outcome of Waterloo, our three experts all give different answers. I like Michael Rowe\u2019s best. Asking $1,250! *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This echoes something Thomas Hardy put into the mouth of an unusual character (to us, the modern reader), in his epic poetic-play, The Dynasts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>SPIRIT SINISTER<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well; be it so.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><em>My argument is that War makes rattling good history; but Peace is poor reading.&nbsp;<\/em>So I back Bonaparte for the reason that he will give pleasure to posterity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>*I bought a small hardback edition on our most recent holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting little coda to this podcast is included, as a bonus, when the guests are asked; What did they not get time to mention?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to this, in which Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss The 100 Days.
