What a classic! The weird disembodied voices, the result of dubbing, are annoying. But they\u2019re almost part of the period charm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certainly the visual aesthetic (which, like the story itself, owes a debt to Kurosawa\u2019s Yojimbo), and the fabulous music of Ennio Morricone, are wonderful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"308\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0140-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24094\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0140-1.jpg 720w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0140-1-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I need that poncho!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clint Eastwood\u2019s Joe is a wonderfully appealing male-fantasy (appealing to men, undoubtedly; to women? I couldn\u2019t say!): tough, taciturn, bright, witty, moralising, but a cold-hearted butcher, and a one man army. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What man doesn\u2019t, secretly or otherwise, wish they were tough enough to take on all their enemies, and laconically and lethally dispatch them all? And get the girl(s), of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Clint looks sooo goddam cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"588\" height=\"828\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0135-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24089\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0135-1.jpg 588w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/img_0135-1-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">What a look!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I want that poncho! Who cares, frankly. It\u2019s just a pathetic McGuffin, giving Eastwood a vehicle do righteous murderous mayhem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing I <em>do<\/em> like, plot wise, in addition to the whole general vibe, is the segment where the Rojos rough Joe up. Eastwood, of course. Ram\u00f3n and Esteban. We\u2019re inured to it now. But it\u2019s pre Peckinpah, pre Tarantino. It\u2019s just a wee celebration of a rather stylised and enjoyable slice of Spaghetti Western hokum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think I\u2019ve got the trilogy on DVD, at home? I\u2019ll have to watch the other two movies.
