Certainly in terms of the charisma of the actors, and the splendour of the production, it\u2019s terrific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Story and ideas wise it depicts Thomas More as a conscientious hero; unwilling to compromise on matters of principle, at a time and in a place where to take such a stance was tantamount to suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"513\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1743.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25187\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1743.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1743-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Blackadder, a man of lesser scruples.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This all put me in mind of that scene in Blackadder III (\u2018Ink &amp; Incapability\u2019), in which Edmund says \u2018Sir Thomas More, for instance, burned alive for refusing to recant his Catholicism, must have been kicking himself, as the flames licked higher, that it never occurred to him to say, \u201cI recant my Catholicism.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, firstly More was beheaded, <em>not<\/em> burnt at the stake. Apparently his beheading was a merciful act on Henry VIII\u2019s part, as the original sentence called for More to be hung, drawn and quartered!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1748-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1748-1-1024x576.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1748-1-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1748-1-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1748-1.png 1334w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">That\u2019s gonna smart!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But secondly, and most fundamentally, the entire story of More, as it\u2019s shown here, is about a man of conscience taking a moral stand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackadder\u2019s moral relativism, born of the very worldly and practical desire to survive, was of course just as strong a feature of normal human behaviour in More\u2019s Tudor era as in any other. Orson Welles has a brief cameo as a vermillion Jabba The Hutt, or rather Cardinal Wolsey. Charismatic, but volatile. Not fat enough, admittedly, but nonetheless good in the role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"634\" height=\"462\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1710-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25193\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1710-1.jpg 634w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1710-1-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Schofield as More. Superb!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course there\u2019s Paul Schofield, in the lead role. And what a performance. His declamatory style in the several eloquent soliloquies bespeaks his Shakespearean pedigree. And he can shout with the best of them, when needed.*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Another reminder of Bl\u2019Adder, and those two actors, in \u2018Sense &amp; Senility\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1712-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1712-1.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1712-1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_1712-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Susannah York as Meg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Susannah York as More\u2019s daughter Meg, and Wendy Hiller, as his wife Alice, are very good as well. One of the most moving scenes is the familial farewell, in The Tower, as they attempt to get Thomas to tow the required line, and thereby ensure his survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court room scene is also very, very good. Indeed, so too is the execution. In fact the whole damn thing is excellent. Watching this makes me want to read More\u2019s <em>Utopia.<\/em> Despite recently finding his <em>Dialogue, etc<\/em>.
