What silly fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This film was initially pitched as <em>Rambo<\/em> in an office block, of the <em>Towering Inferno<\/em> variety. And it\u2019s easy to see why. I won\u2019t synopsise the film here. That\u2019s been done to death elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2198-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25495\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2198-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2198-1-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2198-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2198-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are, of course, some fairly ludicrous moments. Well, truth be told, the entire film is <em>nothing but <\/em>a constant sequence of ludicrous moments. But I s\u2019pose &#8211; not that it really matters or \u2018signifies\u2019 in any way &#8211; I want to enumerate a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are just those ordinary everyday generic movie tropes, such as the one whereby an ordinary Joe (or Roy\/John, in this case) bests a whole mob of supposedly elite-villains, whilst also making everyone from local law enforcement to the FBI look like flat-footed clowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"432\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180-1024x432.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180-1024x432.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180-300x127.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180-768x324.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180-1536x648.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2180.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An iconic sequence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Others are more to do with the mechanics or physics of reality, such as the iconic lift-shaft sequence, or his \u2018gun taped to back\u2019 routine. Both of these, and many others, involve our willing suspension of disbelief, and feed into that perennially popular fantasy of the lone maverick taking on the world, and winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2195-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25494\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2195-1.jpg 780w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2195-1-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2195-1-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Grubby ol\u2019 greedy ol\u2019 Gruber.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As has been written about copiously elsewhere, <em>Die Hard<\/em> also addresses many other subjects, some more overtly than others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the many minor themes in this movie, has to do with wealth: we have the hi-tech location &#8211; with echoes of the Death Star, in that it\u2019s unfinished &#8211; Takagi\u2019s shiny suit, Holly\u2019s Rolex watch, Ellis snorting coke, and Gruber\u2019s grubby little robbery, all undone by an \u2018umble copper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"638\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2188.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25496\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2188.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2188-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2188-768x510.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bloody bathrooms\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McClain manages to shed gallons of blood without losing consciousness. Impressive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2203-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25502\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2203-1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2203-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Al gets his manhood back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue of race is handled in an interesting way. Some of it consciously so. Some in the unstated ways that leak out of cultural norms. But returning to the fantasy of unbridled masculinity, Sgt. Al Powell, desk-jockey Cop, gets his manhood\/Mojo back, by blasting the reanimated zombie of Karl to Hell, with his handgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What could be more American than that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"704\" height=\"900\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2202.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25497\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2202.jpg 704w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2202-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interesting\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As already alluded to above, the film has an interesting history.
