And I loved both albums. But I never took that interest any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of fool am I? What glorious sounds I\u2019ve been missing out on. Currently playing on the car stereo, is 1976 recording <em>A Secret Place<\/em>. And, by gum, it\u2019s reet good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25569\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-768x768.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1-100x100.jpg 100w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2320-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All killer, no filler would be about right. Or just what it says on the cover of this excellent two-fer: \u2018Two All Time Great Classic Albums\u2019. For once the hype is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my ears <em>A Secret Place<\/em> could be a pitch perfect dictionary definition of the phrase \u2018make a joyous sound\u2019. It makes me smile, glad to be alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As track three, \u2018Not Yet\u2019, a Grover original, neared its end, I was typing the \u2018all killer no filler\u2019 bit, above, and hoping fervently that the final fourth track wouldn\u2019t let the team down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"550\" height=\"465\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2316-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25570\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2316-1.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2316-1-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Harvey Mason.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Love Makes It Better\u2019, which closes out this extraordinarily good recording, turns out to be an original by drummer, Harvey Mason. And it certainly <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a dream team they put together for this album. It\u2019s utterly wonderful, from start to finish. And damn hard to follow\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2080-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25572\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2080-1-1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2080-1-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2080-1-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/img_2080-1-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Grover\u2019s second 1972 release.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I think I\u2019ll re-listen to all of the tracks on this CD, before coming back to write up anything on <em>All The King\u2019s Horses<\/em>. Rather oddly they\u2019ve put the four tracks of later 1976 release, <em>Secret Place<\/em>, first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is as good a place as any to make a list of Grover albums I\u2019m interested in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Inner City Blues, 1972 (Kudu)<br \/>All The Kings Horses, 1972 (Kudu)<br \/>Soul Box, 1973 (Kudu)<br \/>Mr Magic, 1975 (Kudu)<br \/>Feels So Good, 1975 (Kudu)<br \/>A Secret Place, 1976 (Kudu)<br \/>Live At The Bijou, 1977 (Kudu)<br \/>Reed Seed, 1978 (Motown)<br \/>Paradise, 1979 (Elektra)<br \/>Skylarkin\u2019, 1980 (Motown)<br \/>Winelight, 1980 (Elektra)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d like to have all his Kudu releases &#8211; I\u2019m only missing <em>Feels So Good<\/em> and <em>Live At The Bijou<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;and perhaps <em>Winelight<\/em>? <em>Reed Seed<\/em>, <em>Paradise<\/em> and <em>Skylarkin<\/em>\u2019 I\u2019m less fussed about. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, well, well\u2026 I\u2019m just beginning to realise that I love the music of Grover Washington Jr. I had Mr Magic and Feels So Good on vinyl, since my teens.
