I\u2019m listening to this in the car driving to work and what should come on as track number three? \u2018Superstar\u2019, which I listened to only yesterday, on the Carpenters 1971 album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is actually surprisingly good. I came to know of Midler\u2019s musical side &#8211; having vaguely been of aware of it all along &#8211; thanks to a collaboration with Tom Waits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uctxOZEusuI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And whilst that\u2019s a wonderful song, and a terrifically fun slice of musical theatre, it didn\u2019t make me rush out and explore Midler\u2019s music. In fact I much prefer Waits\u2019 work with Crystal Gayle, on the OST album that accompanies Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s bizarre movie, <em>This One\u2019s From The Heart<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here we find Midler in the company of all sorts of folk, from a pre-solo career Barry Manilow, to Miles\u2019 alumni, Ron Carter, on bass. I found out, via Facebook, that Carter was actually depping for Milt Holland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The material is pretty varied, and mostly very good. The first real bump in the road, and what I\u2019d feared the whole thing might be like, is The Leader Of The Pack\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1-682x1024.jpg 682w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1-768x1153.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1-1023x1536.jpg 1023w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/img_2891-1.jpg 1332w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bette at The Continental, \u201872.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I found this on rhino.com:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>It was in the early 1970s when Midler began to cement her legend with a gig at the Continental Baths, a notorious gay bath house where her piano accompanist was none less that [sic] future fellow legend, Barry Manilow. He would go on to produce Midler&#8217;s first solo album,&nbsp;<em>The Divine Miss M<\/em>, released in December 1972.
