I wound up choosing <em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em>, primarily for the Operation Neptune Spear part. For example, British <em>Vogue<\/em> magazine prefers the above. This is Jessica Chastain, as \u2018Maya\u2019, a fictional composite character, based in part on Alfreda Frances Bikowsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bikowsky also figures large in the much better <em>Looming Tower<\/em> miniseries. Whilst working at Alec Station, for the CIA, she met the then head of said station, Michael Scheuer, and they eventually married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8933-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27965\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8933-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8933-1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8933-1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8933-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bikowsky and Scheuer as they appear in <em>The Looming Tower<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"358\" height=\"214\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8930.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27966\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8930.jpg 358w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8930-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The actual Michael Scheuer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Intriguingly, whilst it\u2019s easy to find images of the married couple as dramatic characters, I couldn\u2019t find any of them as a real life couple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8934-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27967\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8934-1.jpg 460w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8934-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8934-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8934-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Freda Scheuer, as she is now.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em> distorts history massively, and &#8211; in the way in which the Maya character is used &#8211; does so in a manner calculated to make those who froth at the mouth at the term \u2018woke\u2019 drool rabidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both <em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em> and <em>The Looming Tower<\/em> do real history a great disservice &#8211; as so many countless films do &#8211; by having overly good looking folk glamourise the tawdry doings of much frumpier more ordinary looking folk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"934\" height=\"582\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8936-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27971\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8936-1.jpg 934w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8936-1-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8936-1-768x479.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A schematic of the Abbottabad compound.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates a confusion, especially when films make claims &#8211; as Zero Dark Thirty does &#8211; to be based on real events. Ok, yes, it is <em>based<\/em> on real events. But it puts a very particular gloss on them. And many watching will very probably assume this is just how things really happened, when it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bikowsky, as she was then, wasn\u2019t a lone \u2018empowered female\u2019 crusader, responsible for finding and killing Bin Laden. Not only was she <em>not<\/em> involved in much of the events as depicted here, but also many hold that she and Scheuer are culpable for 9\/11 because they <em>withheld vital intel<\/em> from the FBI. This is a theme <em>The Looming Tower<\/em> addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"990\" height=\"631\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8937-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27970\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8937-1.jpg 990w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8937-1-300x191.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8937-1-768x490.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u2018Waziristan Haveli\u2019, Abbottabad.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting the manhunt for Osama Bin Laden as the work of one determined woman, in the face and teeth of many bumbling men, is pure fantasy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the best part of the film, by far, is the final <em>Canaries<\/em> segment, in which Navy SEAL Team Six (to use just one of this units many names!) attack the compound and kill Bin Laden. It\u2019s very well done, and really rather horrible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"680\" height=\"478\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8935.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27969\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8935.jpg 680w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/img_8935-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jason Clarke as the loathsome Dan Fuller.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of horrible. This movie starts with quite a lot of \u2018enhanced interrogation techniques\u2019 &#8211; or in plain English <em>torture<\/em> &#8211; being used on hapless \u2018terror suspects\u2019, at \u2018dark sites\u2019. Both the real US administration, and the makers of this film, have been widely criticised for suggesting such methods yield useful intel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all, a rather muddled movie, that condenses and distorts an awful lot of history, and then presents it in a rather oddly skewed way. Certainly not brilliant.
