Capricorn, the jazz, funk n\u2019 soul band I ran for some years, used to play Jimmy McGriff\u2019s wonderfully funkified \u2018The Worm\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been collecting chunks of recordings by cats like Groove Holmes and Jimmy Smith, and have been feeling the urge to splurge on organ-meister McGriff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I absolutely love the early Solid State album covers, particularly A Bag Full of Soul<\/em>. That\u2019s got to be made into a funky tee-shirt for my collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I splurged. On the excellently useful cdsvinyljapan<\/a> website, my go-to source for anything that can\u2019t be had cheaper at Amazon or Discogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying to get this lot via Amazon UK would\u2019ve cost me circa \u00a375 – see above – and that\u2019s for just three<\/em> – only half! – of the albums in this order. The others being currently unavailable<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or there\u2019s this\u2026 but it\u2019s just a sampler, not the full four albums pictured.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Every which way you spin this, the cdsvinyljapan order comes out top trumps. Even with a hefty \u00a317 shipping charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This still leaves huge chunks of Mr McGriff\u2019s recorded catalogue to be explored. I\u2019m most interested in the Solid State and Groove Merchant stuff, plus a few odds and ends on labels like Blue Note and United Artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
