But have you seen some of Seagal\u2019s more recent stuff!? Also, in my view, most Hollywood blockbuster movie franchises rapidly deteriorate. Another reason I\u2019ve avoided this for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Teresa suggested we try it. So we did. And I have to confess, it was great &#8211; if utterly ridiculous &#8211; fun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9241-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28055\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9241-1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9241-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Woah, Nelly! Both train and landscape are terrific.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The train setting could\u2019ve been humdrum. But the \u2018Grand Continental\u2019 is <em>quite<\/em> a train. With upper and lower decks, and large viewing windows, it passes through some terrific landscapes and locations &#8211; e.g. The Rocky Mountains, inc. a ghost town &#8211; which add to the charm of this otherwise potentially formulaicly gonzo follow-up to the formulaicly gonzo (but equally effective) original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in <em>Under Siege<\/em>, Ryback just happens to cross paths with malevolent \u00fcber-villains, to their inevitable detriment. In this instance the plot-driving McGuffin involves a crazily powerful satellite weapon, launched at the movies start (allowing the movie to shoehorn in some suitably impressive Space shuttle launch footage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"342\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9238-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28054\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9238-1.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9238-1-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">McGill, Bogosian and Afifi Alaouie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t always or often go in for plot synopses. Particularly so on cornball mainstream fodder. So you can look elsewhere for that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst the villains we have: the motor-mouth \u00fcber nerd (Bogosian), and two noteworthy evil mofos (Everett McGill and Peter Greene*), plus a load of less notable cannon-fodder hoodlums. Charismatic villains are a necessary counterweight to movie \u2018goodies\u2019. And U<em>nder Siege 2 <\/em>does well in this department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Zed, in <em>Pulp Fiction<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flat-footed govt and military folk &#8211; inc. such stalwarts as Nick Mancuso, Andy Romano and Dale Dye (reprising their characters from <em>Under Siege<\/em>) &#8211; are suitably remote and ineffectual functionaries. Leaving all the \u2018meaningful\u2019 on-the-spot problem-solving to ex-Navy SEAL Casey Ryback, the deadliest chef on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"626\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9239-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28056\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9239-1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9239-1-300x235.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img_9239-1-768x601.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Katherine Heigl as Sarah, Casey\u2019s niece.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This sort of lone-male fantasy, in which an imperturbable and gruff-voiced bloke single-handedly defeats hordes of evil ne\u2019erdowells, to the oohs and aahs of all &#8211; from grateful hostages to bodacious babes &#8211; is such a core trope of modern American cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The frankly pornographic brutality and violence movies like this revel in is made permissible because it\u2019s being doled out to hyper-evil villains. It\u2019s a cartoon world. Simple, brutal, and\u2026 shamefully thrilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very firmly part of that core of modern US culture that Zappa refers to as \u2018dumb fun\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ridiculously implausible dumb fun\u2026 I\u2019ve avoided this movie for ages.
