Utterly bonkers!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently this was a financial flop when it came out, and a major reason Carpenter turned his back on Hollywood, to go back to a more \u2018indie\u2019 style approach. Despite this it\u2019s gone on to acquire minor cult status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very mixed bag, by turns both terrific fun and utterly stupid. Some of the effects are terrific, others risible. The characters are B-movie pulp fare, and the scenario even more wildly erratic, mixing Kung-Fu with \u2018Chinese myth\u2019 and boneheaded USofA pecs, guns n rock\u2019n\u2019roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"848\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0573.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3131\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0573.jpg 848w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0573-300x170.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0573-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mad wicker headgear!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all over the map! Up and down quality wise like an amphetamine yo-yo. Kurt Russell is fun as meat-headed meatball physique\u2019d truck-drivin\u2019 tough guy Jack Burton, drivin\u2019 his big-rig, the Pork Chop Express.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An airport pick up with a Chinese pal, after a porcine delivery, and some all night gambling, goes very weird, when Wang\u2019s fianc\u00e9 is abducted by a Chinese gang. Jack and Wang give chase, and wind up embroiled in a gang fight that takes a bizarre supernatural turn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0575-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3132\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0575-1024x580.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0575-300x170.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0575-768x435.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0575.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Magical stuff\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0570.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3133\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0570.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0570-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Weird monsters\u2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And before we know it, Jack falls for Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall), who also ends up kidnapped, both ladies having been Shanghaied, it transpires, by the mad, bad n\u2019 evil Lo Pan, an accursed sorcerer. Turns out he needs a green-eyed gal, and Miao and Gracie both happen to fit the bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all this chaotic preamble, the main meat of the film becomes the crazy rescue mission, which involves a descent into a subterranean Chinese underworld, with lots of close call scrapes, martial arts madness, a smattering of monsters, sorcery type shenanigans, and a lot of dumb fun\/laughs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"302\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3130\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0571.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/img_0571-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This guy takes stress to new levels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t honestly say it\u2019s a great film. In many ways it\u2019s pretty bad.
