I don\u2019t currently have Passarim (\u201887), Antonio Brasileiro (\u201895) or Minha Alma Canta (\u201897).  So there are a few gaps to be filled at some future date. But I\u2019ve written up brief pieces on 11 of his 14 solo albums, plus a number of others from his collaborations (I\u2019ll be filling in the remainder of those blanks as well, in time). It\u2019s been fun listening to all these great recordings again. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An absolutely stunning collection of twenty-four pieces by Tom Jobim, ranging from richly orchestrated band renditions, to incredibly minimal arrangements. From the familiar bossas (albeit often heavily reworked) to his less familiar \u2018chanson\u2019 style piano ballads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was for years a limited private pressing. Only \u2018going public\u2019 after Jobim\u2019s passing. There are parallels with his fantastic 1980 recording, <em>Terra Brasilis<\/em>, for which Claus Ogerman supplied arrangements. On this later recording &#8211; 1987 &#8211; Jobim uses the same musicians (friends and family!) that recorded his official \u201887 release, <em>Passarim<\/em>, with Jacques Morelenbaum supplying arrangements (and cello!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_1085-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3394\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_1085-1024x570.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_1085-300x167.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_1085-768x427.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/img_1085.jpg 1175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jobim and Banda Nova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another notable feature is how, more than on any other Jobim album (at least that I\u2019m aware of) he steps back from the mic\u2019, sharing lead vocal duties with Paulo Jobim, Danilo Caymmi, and several female vocalists (including Paula Morelenbaum, Jacques\u2019 wife, and his own wife and daughter!), and even occasionally rendering the vocals as richly harmonised chorales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An utterly sublime recording.
