Starring a youthful James Mason, with some oddly comic support, and a very young Herbert Lom as the villain. Made in \u201844, but set in 38, it\u2019s an oddball thing. It seems to want to be both a thriller and a comedy. And in the end it\u2019s not that great at being either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1860.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3931\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1860.jpg 448w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1860-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A young and handsome James Mason.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mason is Peter Vadassy, half French and half Austrian, looking to move to France and become a doctor, and escape Hitler\u2019s regime. A mix up of cameras with another guest at the titular Hotel Reserve lands Vadassy in the embrace of the French police, who ask him to do a bit of sleuthing or espionage type work on their behalf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1861.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3932\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A young and suave Herbert Lom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially the movie is about how Mason\u2019s Vadassy character struggles, in a rather paranoid yet also playful environment &#8211; folk holidaying in southern France, on the edge of war &#8211; teetering between appearing too nefarious himself, whilst trying to smoke out the real villain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1863.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3933\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1863.jpg 448w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_1863-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Southern France on a studio lot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly filmed on a pretty unconvincing set, and with a rather oddball cast, some darkly serious, others bizarrely comical, it\u2019s not a classic. But it <em>is<\/em> a silly slice of period fun. And by the end it felt kind of lame but enjoyable.
