So I had to take a break to sort that out. Took a while! I needed to adjust pretty much <em>everything<\/em>! This then meant I could \u2018turn\u2019 the block, kind of primitive lathe-style, into a large tubular rod. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4154\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img_2137-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u2026 and used this hand drill as a mini lathe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After this initial rounding stage, I took a lead out of Paul Seller\u2019s book, and used a hand saw, followed by chisels\/rasps, to narrow the circumference of the lower basal part of the blank. Then the drill-press did the holes for the threaded-rod and fixing doodad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these pics my rather slapdash work looks ok. And I\u2019ve learned lots. Turns out it\u2019s the scrub plane. I felt the handles I\u2019d made weren\u2019t seating quite right, so I made a pair of cork \u2018gaskets\u2019, using the footprint of each piece. I also had to add a bit of dowel back into the top hole of the \u2018knob\u2019.
