In others, it\u2019s a bit below par. The visual aesthetics are pretty sublime. The style of acting, whist admittedly funny, is so mannered as to oscillate between charming and annoying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ensemble cast, headed up by Ralph Fiennes, is incredible. But, as with the hyper mannered m.o. of the entire film, this is both a strength and a weakness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plot, convoluted and bizarre &#8211; Byzantine seems an apt term &#8211; really is, the McGuffin of McGuffins. And once again that speaks to the schizoid tendencies of this film. It\u2019s simultaneously brilliant and rather pointless or meaningless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"855\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_4863-855x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4999\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_4863-855x1024.jpg 855w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_4863-250x300.jpg 250w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_4863-768x920.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_4863.jpg 1022w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Can a film be nothing more than an assemblage or collage of pretty or amusing tableaux? That\u2019s essentially what this is. In a way, this makes it a perfect expression &#8211; and a frightening, almost damning condemnation- of our times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As art it\u2019s stunningly beautiful. And as a kind of love letter to art itself, and even a whole melange of certain types of art, architecture, even culture, it\u2019s terrific. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite its frothy weightless beauty there\u2019s a cold vacuity in there as well, as regards the lost or vanished but perhaps always imaginary world it conjures up.
