It\u2019s certainly an epic production. But when Ebert\u2019s critic buddy Siskel describes it as not much more than \u2018a parade of famous faces\u2019, we can be fairly sure that some who saw this weren\u2019t too impressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6106-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5241\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6106-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6106-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6106-768x510.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6106.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Attenborough directs Redford\u2019s river crossing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Directed by Dickie Attenborough, I can see why some folk find it less than 100% satisfying. It\u2019s length &#8211; and it is very, very, <em>very<\/em> long &#8211; could be a strength. But for those who <em>don\u2019t<\/em> like it, it might feel like an interminable drag. For starters there\u2019s the sheer scale of the production. In a pre CGI works, such epic productions really are a special thing, to be treasured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, \u2018rivet counter\u2019 type buffs will carp at the wrong or badly faked <em>materiel<\/em>. But, frankly, this isn\u2019t the worst offender in terms of WWII movies. Nowadays it\u2019s become easier to either fake real vehicles, or use CGI. But \u2018back in the day\u2019 it wasn\u2019t necessarily so easy, or &#8211; in truth &#8211; always deemed important enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s clear that efforts were made. But not enough satisfy those who know their SdKfz\u2019s from their PzKpfw\u2019s! I\u2019m a WWII military history nut\/buff, but I\u2019m prepared to hold the pedantry beast in abeyance and give older movies more leeway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"312\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_5222.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5244\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_5222.jpg 312w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_5222-187x300.jpg 187w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This was the edition of this book I had\/read as a kid.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst <em>The Longest Day <\/em>was shot in black and white, <em>A Bridge Too Far <\/em>is in colour. But they share not just epic proportions and Cornelius Ryan books as their basis, but also great stirring scores, terrific star-studded casts, and a desire for accuracy that includes having the right languages spoken, with subtitles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"665\" height=\"1000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6123.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5245\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6123.jpg 665w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6123-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 665px) 100vw, 665px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maximilian Schell as Waffen SS Gen. Bittrich.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Feldmarschal Model is portrayed as a self-important buffoon, with some of his subordinates chafing under his pompous complacency. How accurate this is I have no idea. Amongst the English brass there\u2019s a preponderance of whiskers and clipped toff accents. The Yanks are, predictably, sceptical of Monty\u2019s plans, and, for the most part, gruff no-nonsense \u2018balls out\u2019 tough guys!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can reach almost comically cartoonish dimensions, as with Elliot Gould\u2019s fun but faintly irritating cigar-chomping Col. Stout, based on Col. Sink, of <em>Band of Brothers<\/em> fame!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6121-1024x438.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5246\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6121-1024x438.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6121-300x128.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6121-768x328.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6121.jpg 1118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">James Caan delivers a strong performance as Sgt. Dohun.*<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the actors acquit themselves admirably.  The only real clangers, for me, are the aforementioned Gould, and Gene Hackman\u2019s Polish Maj. Gen. Sosabowksi, whose accent is bizarre, coming off more Brooklyn than Bialystok!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making a war film of this type is, I suspect, much <em>much<\/em> harder than most would imagine. Trying to balance a grand overview with the nitty gritty details, weighing historical accuracy against dramatic and entertainment considerations, and so on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5248\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/img_6148-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This scene is rather beautifully shot! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>War is &#8211; according to many testimonies &#8211; largely boredom punctuated by brief but intense moments of terror. And the need for exposition can make \u2018leadership scenarios\u2019 seem rather leaden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there\u2019s the logistical stuff, both that required to make the movie, and the stuff depicted, such as the Bailey bridge building scene, and the build up to Maj. Cook\u2019s crossing of the Waal, to take the Nijmegen bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally the more I see this film, the better I think it is. Sure, it\u2019s not perfect. Very little is. But it is epic, exciting, sometimes funny, sometimes moving. Just five of the many featured stars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>* Interestingly this rather colourful episode is allegedly based on real events. Although the exact details aren\u2019t altogether the same in real life as they are in the film, it makes cracking good film entertainment!
