But I\u2019ve only now finally gone back to and finished it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I\u2019m honest this isn\u2019t my normal mug o\u2019 Java. But I\u2019ve been softened up for it by Masayoshi Takanaka\u2019s wonderful double-album of the same name, that\u2019s both based on the story, and uses Ul de Rico\u2019s art on\u2019t the packaging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"564\" height=\"420\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2998-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10179\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2998-1.jpg 564w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2998-1-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I love this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes getting an entry into something this way &#8211; so, the fabulous Takanaka album predisposes me to being more receptive to the artwork\/story that inspired it &#8211; widens one\u2019s aesthetics. If I\u2019d only seen the book, I might\u2019ve rejected it out of hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2996-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2996-1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2996-1-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pretty amazing, eh!?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the artworks, such as the one that adorns Masayoshi\u2019s album cover, or the one directly above this paragraph, really do draw me in, and seduce me. Others, like the one directly below, I\u2019ve grown to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"774\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2992-1-1024x774.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10181\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2992-1-1024x774.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2992-1-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2992-1-768x580.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2992-1.jpg 1048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And this in turn leads me to dig stuff like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"721\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2997-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10182\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2997-1.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2997-1-300x211.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2997-1-768x541.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The rainbow goblins\u2019 dream. Far out!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And in the end I\u2019m won over, and full of admiration for the simple charms of the story, and the intensity of the artworks. How about this for endpapers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"348\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2994-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10183\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2994-1.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2994-1-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Flowers melt into a marbled ink pattern.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ul de Rico did a follow up, called The White Goblin. And Masayoshi Takanaka followed suit! I\u2019m listening to the latter right now. I\u2019m not as immediately smitten by it as I was by his Rainbow Goblins project. It\u2019s a bit more mainstream rock\/pop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2999-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10184\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2999-1.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2999-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2999-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/img_2999-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The saga continues!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But, truth be told, I feel myself being sucked in and won over. Seduced ever further from my own usual aesthetics. In the end, it feels to me as if I\u2019m relaxing and letting Ul de Rico and Masayoshi Takanaka take me, one by each hand, into their visual and sonic worlds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I think that\u2019s a good thing\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I first drafted this post in September or October, 2022.
