Perhaps especially his <em>Magical Connection <\/em>album, of 1970. I\u2019ve known and loved a lot of his stuff for many years. But some recent re-releases have re-kindled the flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searching for more stuff by him, I stumbled upon this concert (see the YouTube vid\u2019, above). And, with wonderfully serendipitous synchronicity, he kicks off this performance with that very same John Sebastian number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img_4125.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img_4125.jpg 316w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img_4125-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img_4125-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img_4125-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">What a totally groovy album cover!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One real downer, however, is that all the music I\u2019m currently loving, turns out to be pricey. And I\u2019m stone cold broke! The Szabo albums I\u2019m after are all circa \u00a315 a pop (not inc shipping), and the Casiopea albums (and other Jap J-Fusion stuff) are more like \u00a330 each. I also found out that someone put the audio out on CD (limited edition). I\u2019d love to have that! Bassist Alad\u00e1r Pege, a new name to me (but apparently Hungary\u2019s premier bassist at the time), is pretty astonishing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only slight dip for me comes with Kov\u00e1cs\u2019 vocals on the McCartney\u2019s number, My Love, which are just a bit too ABBA for my tastes. But the music, probably more how the band interpret it than the original piece, is still great. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intriguingly Szabo plays two numbers, Django and Reinhardt, respectively, in the set, kind of tipping his tile to the great Gypsy jazz pioneer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I feel obliged to include a link to Doug Payne\u2019s excellent and informative entry on this stuff, so <a href=\"http:\/\/dougpayne.com\/jazzpod.htm\">here it is<\/a>.
