Ideally with room to spare. There\u2019s naught worse than beautiful images that run into the gutter\/spine of a book! Well, I admit, there\u2019s a lot that\u2019s worse. But you know what I\u2019m saying.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"314\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5339.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7223\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5339.jpg 316w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5339-300x298.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5339-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5339-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">How can you not love this?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This post isn\u2019t meant to be in any way comprehensive. For starters I\u2019m limiting it purely to one record label and one artist: Art Blakey on Blue Note. But isn\u2019t it amazing how great these covers are? For my money they elevate the packaging to a plane very much akin to the music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"403\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5350.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5350.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5350-298x300.jpg 298w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5350-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5350-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This one belongs to a weird sub-category!*<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And when both music and art are sublime, that kind of sympathetic synergy is a wonderful thing, to be savoured, treasured, and just plain enjoyed\/appreciated\u2026 so feast your eyes. What a face.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Art Blakey Reid Miles and Francis Wolff found someone who had the musical spirit they loved, plus seemingly unbounded energy and charisma, and really striking looks to boot. He\u2019s a funny looking dude, in some ways. But he\u2019s incredibly photogenic with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"820\" height=\"820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349.jpg 820w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349-768x768.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5349-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fontastic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wolff would be busy, snapping away at recording sessions. And then later Miles would work his hyper-aesthetic design magic. The resulting package is on a par with the music, as art in its own right. And it helps lend the era\/genre a hard to define but instantly recognisable vibe, both rootsy and yet sophisticated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5348.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7242\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5348.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5348-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5348-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5348-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A typical Wolff studio portrait.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Above is the kind of raw material Wolff would provide Reid Miles with, a fantastic studio shot of the artist at work. Interestingly Wolf\u2019s photographic estate is handled (at least in part?), by the specialist jazz label Mosaic, who might very well have taken their name &#8211; they certainly share it &#8211;  from a Blakey track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"507\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5338.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7227\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5338.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5338-296x300.jpg 296w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5338-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the covers use black and white photos with single colours as screening tints. And the use of typography is just phenomenal. But as the images directly  above and below demonstrate. Miles could still weave his spells with full colour imagery, and more colourful font palettes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"302\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5343.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5343.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5343-298x300.jpg 298w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5343-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5343-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether using a fuller range of colours, or going super stark and minimalist, as on <em>Three Blind Mice<\/em> (below), these covers have a tremendous power. The following images are all later non Wolff\/Miles productions that clearly owe a debt to and seek to emulate (with varying degrees of fidelity\/success)  the classic Blue Note house style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"399\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5341.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5341.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5341-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5341-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5341-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above is, by normal standards, a great cover. But frankly it\u2019s not in the same league as the real deal. The effort below is a lot better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5368.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7232\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5368.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5368-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5368-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_5368-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Another later \u2018in the style of\u2019 example.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I intend to get a body of these and similar record covers decently printed, and then frame and display them myself, both in my office\/home studio, and around our home. To finish, a very early example, from back when Blue Note issued 10\u201d discs.
