It\u2019s great to hear a fantastic drummer telling it, from his perspective, like it is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reminds me of a video in which George Harrison says he could be quite a good guitarist if he could be bothered to practice! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <em>I am<\/em> a drum teacher, more broadly speaking &#8211; as a musician\/artist &#8211; I wouldn\u2019t necessarily advice that anyone to do as I do, or, for that matter, as Ian Paice does. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Paice, I haven\u2019t had a stellar career recording and performing with one of the worlds\u2019 most successful rock bands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What <em>I do<\/em> have in common with him, however, is noticing that when I have periods of frequent live musical activity &#8211; rehearsals, recordings, and especially gigs &#8211; my playing develops quite naturally\/organically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"755\" height=\"644\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/img_5676.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7503\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/img_5676.jpg 755w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/img_5676-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A much younger Paice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But then again, unlike Paice, I\u2019m someone who does actually positively revel in practice. Indeed, over time I\u2019ve evolved away from the \u2018just jamming\u2019 model (what I call \u2018free play\u2019 in my teaching), as favoured by Ian, towards focussed technique-based work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think ideally one ought to have a see-sawing motion of balance between such free play and technical development. Both ought to inform and improve each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, one of Paicey\u2019s favourite hobbyhorse points concerns the single-stroke roll. And that in turn reminds me of a video in which Grayson Nekrutman seeks to emulate Buddy Rich\u2019s lightning speed singles (amongst other things!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FUaK21mddvw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian Paice believes, and I can totally see and understand why, that everything else in drumming flows from this single simple yet limitlessly challenging technique or rudiment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, let\u2019s treasure, celebrate and learn from Ian whilst we still have him around.
