Wow!? How hard is this<\/em>!? It might be easier to pick my top few artists? Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits are no brainers. After that it gets tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one is etched into my being; melancholy beauty, at its most powerfully maudlin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But I love For The Roses<\/em> as well!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This all came about when I wanted to pick a \u2018top five albums\u2019 list, to illustrate a private posting on cataloguing my CD collection. it rapidly became clear that it was not going to be easy! Perhaps not even possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J-Fusion at its slick funky glossy and melodic best.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If it were my current<\/em> top five that\u2019d be different. My most listened to CD right now, for example, is Casiopea\u2019s debut(pictured above). But I\u2019m also listening to a lot of Sons of Champlin, right now, and I\u2019m not as sold on them as the other artists that I\u2019m featuring in this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intense, colourful, surreal, poetic, earthy. Amazing!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I know it might seem weird, but as a historic top five disc, Trout Mask Replica<\/em> is definitely up there (with Lick My Decals Off <\/em>in hot pursuit!). Not music I\u2019d listen to all the time. And my honeymoons with these discs were many, many moons ago. But I have an abiding love for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slabs of sound, wafting through space and time, all floating atop Leibezeit\u2019s incredible grooves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Can\u2019s Future Days <\/em>also has a special place in my musical heart, closely pursued by Tago Mago<\/em>!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memories of this on constant rotation are bittersweet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And whilst I\u2019m thinking in the longer term, like this, then I suppose Steely Dan and Donald Fagen figure very large. Aja<\/em>, Katy Lied<\/em> and The Nightfly<\/em> all being rave faves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah, The Don. An almost perfect record!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mad cover! Great album.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the Casiopea one, so far these are all song-based albums, of a broadly speaking Pop nature. If I were to pick some Rock albums, Thin Lizzy, Zep and Van Halen would be right up there (poss\u2019 even Slayer\u2019s Reign in Blood<\/em>, perhaps?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s close with Lizzy, \u2018twixt this\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026 and this. Still In Love With You is Divine!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Takes me back to my childhood. After Status Quo, and with far more earnest interest, Lizzy were the first group I really got into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise with Zep, is it this one\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And, thanks to both my dad, and my first drum teacher, Bernie \u2018Boogie Man\u2019 Pritchard, Zeppelin soon followed Lizzy on to my dad\u2019s ol\u2019 (then new!) Technics Stereo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Zep I was equally taken with all of I, II and III. I only got into IV later, and – as brilliant as it is – (Stairway alone is priceless), it didn\u2019t have the same visceral impact the first three had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s Jaaazz\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was massive for me in my mid-teens. Still love it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I could go on like this. Should I go with Caravanserai<\/em>, or Welcome<\/em>, for Santana? With Herbie, is it Fat Albert<\/em>, Headhunters<\/em> or\u2026 Coltrane\u2019s Love Supreme<\/em> is up there, as is Davis\u2019 Kind Of Blue<\/em> (or back in my late teens, ESP<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what about Brazil? Jobim, Joyce, Marcos Valle\u2026 and on it goes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got lost in the deserts with this one!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This ought to be a guilty pleasure. But I have no shame!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m finishing with one that really isn\u2019t anywhere near the top. But to be fair to Slayer and the album, I\u2019ve listened to it tons. Rather like true crime and serial killers – the kind of dark subjects with which Slayer themselves were obsessed – I find it hypnotically compelling. If Van Halen\u2019s 1984 <\/em>is a \u2018guilty pleasure\u2019, this is a \u2018dirty secret\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, I can only conclude that picking my top five favourite albums is pretty near impossible! I mean, The Beatles Rubber Soul<\/em>, a biggie for me around 16-18, didn\u2019t even get a mention \u2018til right here, at the very end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
