But I\u2019m definitely having one tonight! Shouldn\u2019t be, as I\u2019m utterly exhausted. For one thing I was working on an oak tabletop for Hannah today, using wood (from Simon and Claire\u2019s recent kitchen refurb) that required lots of scraping and sanding (and I didn\u2019t have access to power tools!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyhoo\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e27N644cJv0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t be sure quite where I started, but I went down a musical rabbit hole, possibly beginning with Cortex\u2019s <em>Troupeau Bleu <\/em>album. That lead me to Troc\u2019s Kali Lo, a track I absolutely adore. Andre Ceccarelli drums on it, and his drumming is my idea of musical perfection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much later I found the above Ceccarelli drum solo, from a jazz gig with singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. The freedom and intensity of his playing put me in mind of another French Drummer, Magma\u2019s Christian Vander. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that lead me to the video at the top of this post. I\u2019ve watched it before. But every time I see it, I\u2019m astounded. His \u2018in the moment\u2019 commitment, and technique &#8211; but technique at the service of expression &#8211; are <em>sooo<\/em> intense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These guys have &#8211; insomnia jokes aside &#8211; awoken me from a drumming trance, I think (or is that hope?). I need to stop being an equivocating pansy, man up, and go fully mental! Is this an epiphany?
