It lists 17 previous similar single\/volume paperback editions, the last being 1977. I don\u2019t know if this means this <em>is<\/em> a 17th edition, or poss\u2019 the 18th?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, I got this \u2018cause, albeit perhaps not the <em>exact<\/em> same edition, this is very much in the style of &#8211; it looks and feels the same, basically &#8211; the one I first owned and read, as a child. Inside, very near the back of the book, I found a slip of paper (pictured below); perhaps used as a bookmark by the original owner\/reader?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9578\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9547-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Found this inside!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather happily\/amazingly (like the oh so convenient clues in a Poirot or Holmes mystery) it\u2019s dated <em>very<\/em> specifically, 16\/4\/82. Looks like it\u2019s a strip torn from a photocopy of a technical drawing!?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I turned ten on January the 5th, 1982. With a rather beautiful synchronicity, at least to my mind, and although I didn\u2019t know it back then, I share my birthday with the illustrious J.R.R. himself, no less! And it was around that age that, having already read <em>The Hobbit<\/em>, I first started reading <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9579\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.sebpalmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/img_9545-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Must carefully remove that sticker!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve talked about that elsewhere, no doubt on several occasions. I was <em>very<\/em> proud to be a precocious or advanced reader. Is that a bit pathetic? Maybe. But I can\u2019t help it now. I\u2019m still a bit that way, i.e. conceited about my supposed \u2018erudition\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to collect this book from the local sorting\/delivery branch of the PO. Twice they\u2019d tried to deliver. And, to their credit (and with better professionalism than is often the case), they\u2019d left those red attempted delivery slips, all properly filled. Those were the days, eh?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was of course in, on both occasions. But quite possibly catatonic, having lain awake till around about 5am the previous night. This is quite regular and \u2018normal\u2019 for me, at present. And, not to put to fine a point on it, it\u2019s f*cking awful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyways, I collect the book, three Zopiclone tablets from the Boots pharmacy at Tesco (plus an English breakfast lunch and a few pizzas for our dinner), and dispose of a broken Breville sandwich-maker at the dump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back home there\u2019s the endless Sisyphus style tasks of de-cluttering, cleaning, and re-arranging our home, with a view to letting a room. It\u2019s better, honest!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m still managing to avoid booze and other temptations. That must count for something, surely? And yet I feel no sense of joy or accomplishment, alas. Just a dead leaden depression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I\u2019m teaching &#8211; only my Wednesday teaching really remains, and that\u2019s severely depleted, I feel like &#8211; or rather I <em>know<\/em> &#8211; I\u2019m losing my skills (both teaching and drumming itself), through lack of practise. And music as a whole area of my life seems like an oppressive weighty burden of failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So a few simple pleasures get leaned upon, for solace. I binged on snooker for a spell. Then I replaced that obsession with tennis (mostly but not only Wimbledon). And now, having just finished re-reading <em>The Hobbit<\/em>, I feel inclined to re-read <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em>. Hence this nostalgic purchase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve actually got quite a few editions of the <em>LOTR<\/em> trilogy. Mostly in proper separate three-volume trilogy format. But I rather fancy the physical and aesthetic prospect of re-reading this old George Allen &amp; Unwin single volume paperback version.
